World Bank approves $258 million to improve Pakistan’s healthcare

To facilitate universal health coverage and reinforce primary health care in Pakistan, the World Bank has approved $258 million.

In a press release, it said that the National Health Support Programme ‘complements’ current investments in human capital. It also builds on health reforms, whose main target is to improve healthcare and make it accessible.

Under the initiative, the international financial institution identified three main areas of focus: healthcare financing, essential services, accountability and governance, and healthcare coverage.

While emphasizing further on these areas, the statement said that the program aims to provide adequate staff, supplies and medicine for better patient care.

Similarly, to provide better management of healthcare services, there will be focus on accountability and governance. The emphasis on healthcare financing was to enhance expenditure tracking to sustain healthcare services and delivery.

The NHSP is co-funded by the  Global Financing Facility (GEF) for Women, Children and Adolescents (GFF), and the International Development Association.

The head secretariat at GFF, Monique Vledder said that the partnership between Pakistan and the GFF focuses on building a healthcare system that is sustainable, while simultaneously ensuring women, children and adolescents have access to these facilities.

According to the Country Director of World Bank for Pakistan, Najy Benhassine, by working to improve the provincial health systems, the programme is improving the health and nutritional outcomes for the people.
